Product description
Description: This scarse medical healing plant print originates from: 'Afbeelding der Artseny-Gewassen...', a Dutch edition of 'Icones Plantarum Medicinalium. Abbildungen von Arzneygewaechsen.', by J. Zorn, Nurnberg, Germany, 1780. This plate is from a 1796 Dutch edition, consisting of 5 volumes with 500 plates. We will include the original register on a first come first serve basis, because several are printed on one sheet, or a copy of this register. We acquired a small incomplete lot of prints from this work and did not see it offered anywhere else.

Artists and Engravers: Author: Johannes Zorn (1739-1799) was a German pharmacist and botanist. He was especially interested in the botany of the new world and is perhaps most famous for having the plant family 'Zornia' named after him. This plate is engraved by J.S. Leitner after B. Thanner.

Seth Kellogg's Birds of the Air: Ice send geese south -

The Canada geese will difficulty a bit of grass and pasture if they are to find food enough to survive the deep snow delivered by the latest great blizzard. Will they headman farther south or brazen it out until the snow melts. The dozens of common goldeneyes will stay put in the open D where they dive for fish. Since the first substantial snowfall, the feeder birds have been swarming the yard like feathered bees. The microscopic gray and white sparrows once known as snowbirds cover the ground wherever the millet or mixed seed is thrown. A dialogue of advice - you will be visited by relatively few sparrows if you only put mixed seed in hanging feeders. One wonders how this bird, officially named the gloominess-eyed junco, got the common name of “junco. ” That Latin word means rushes or reeds, wetland plants where juncos are once in a blue moon found. The junco breeds in highland conifer forests throughout the continent, even as near as the hill towns west of the Connecticut Valley. The thorough name of the junco is seemingly more appropriate, “hyemalis,” the Latin word for “winter. ” At that season, the juncos are seen in lowlands across America, making it one of the most inexhaustible birds on the continent. There are five subspecies of junco, four of them native to the West, while the single eastern subspecies is called the “slate-colored. ” My furtively name for this bird is “slaty sparrow. Thanks to the habit of throwing seed on the ground many times each day, the edition of juncos seen at one time in my yard has grown to 75 individuals. With them are three other sparrows in much smaller numbers, the white-throated, the inexpensively, and the tree sparrow. Another group of winter birds are the finches. Since the first big snow on 23 January, there has been a drastic wax in the number of finches that come to the hanging sunflower feeders. Before then, the house finch count was larger than normal, about 15 birds at a span, but the number of goldfinches was five or six, a far cry from the usual fifty, or even a hundred. The chickadees, nuthatches, and titmice that also enjoy the sunflower have been euphoric to have minimal competition when they swoop in to land, grab a seed, then flutter off to eat it nearby. For three days, the number of goldfinches was more than sixty, along with a connect of pine siskins in the pack. The next storm hit at night, and dawn brought a few birds in search of food on the new-fallen snow, much of it blown aside by the chilling learn of. Sparrows were landing and scratching frantically for what was buried beneath their feet. At first, dozens came to the newly scattered worn out, but as usual the early gorging settled down to a steady flow of birds coming and going, landing and flushing. The want of a redpoll added to the list of birds using the hanging feeders faded. Instead, four munching cowbirds came, the opening of the winter season. Then it was back to starling control, sometimes rapping on the window, more often running outside with a growl and a banging broom. For a few minutes the suet was close by to the hungry woodpeckers, and they rushed in to grab a bite before the starlings returned. The downy woodpeckers suffered the most from each starling transgression, up to six of them clutching the tree trunks, chasing each other rather than risking a charge at the well-armed starling. Even the larger lanuginous woodpeckers were cowed by the starling’s lethal bill. This winter for the first.
